At least thirteen individuals perish and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
